Before choosing your fire
It is recommended that your flue is inspected before you choose your fire to determine its type, size and suitability. It is also recommended that you understand what your situation is so that you are able to make an informed decision and only consider products that are suitable for your home. You should understand what any particular product requires in relation to space, flue type and additional ventilation.
Fuel
Natural Gas or Electric?
Natural Gas. Natural Gas fires can provide a higher heat output than electric fires and are generally cheaper to run. Electric. Electric fires can be situated virtually anywhere within your home as they do not require a flue.
LPG
If you require a gas fire or stove but live in an area where there is no natural gas supply then you may want to consider an LPG (bottled gas) appliance using LPG in replace of natural gas. Many of the fires listed within this website can be ordered as LPG (bottled gas) versions. For more information please contact us.
Controls
Manual, Slide or Remote?
Manual control also known as rotary control is usually located behind a removable cover. Slide control is usually located at the top side of the fire allowing you to control the fire without having to bend down. Remote control allows the fire to be controlled from the comfort of your own armchair. Most remote control fires on the market these days do not require an electric mains supply but utilise integral batteries both within the fire and its handset.
Hearths
All gas fires must not stand directly onto a carpet or floorboards. A hearth must be used.
The heath must be:
Solid and made of non-combustible materials at least 12mm thick and 50mm above the floor. Extend 300mm or more from the front of the burner and 150mm from each side of the burner (Unless manufacturers installation instructions state otherwise).
Flue Types
Open flue Balanced Flue Fan assisted flue Flueless
If you don·t already know what flue type you have in your home then the text below may help you identify it. You will need to know what flue type you have so you can select a suitable gas fire. Open Flue This is a flue that is open to the room, the gases produced by the fire are drawn up the flue by convection currents and the up draught caused by the outside air passing over the flue. Open flues can be categorised into the following: Conventional brick chimney. A traditional chimney, more common in older homes. These are class 1 flues as the diameter of the flue is at least 7". This type of flue is easily recognisable by a chimneystack with terracotta pot or gas terminal at the top. Pre cast flue. These are common in newer homes and are built into an existing wall in the home. They are known as class 2 flues. Recognisable by a ridge vent or metal flue tube and terminal on the roof. Prefabricated flue. This is a twin walled flue made from stainless steel. Generally, 5" in diameter this is a class 2 flue. But can be class 1 if the diameter is at least 7". Recognisable by a metal flue and terminal on the roof and a metal flue box behind the fire.
Brick flues can have a 5" flexible liner fitted into them which will convert them to a class 2 flue. Balanced Flue If you do not have a chimney or any open flue then one of the following options may be of use. This flue seals off the fire from the room and so the air used for combustion comes from outside. The products of combustion are released into the outside air through the flue. There are two channels in the flue, one draws the air in from outside, while the other takes the products of combustion and releases them outside. Most fires using a balanced flue have to be mounted on an outside wall so the flue can go straight out of the back and into the outside air. Fan Assisted Flue This type of flue allows a gas fire to be sited on an outside wall in your home, the flue is led through the wall to the outside where the combustion products are released into the air. A flue box is placed on the outside wall, here a fan draws the combustion products from the fire along the flue and into the outside air. Flueless Flueless fires use catalytic technology to remove any harmful products of combustion and circulate clean warmed air into the room. Strict conditions apply to the use of these products including minimum room size, minimum purpose ventilation and sighting restrictions. If you are unsure what type of flue you have, contact us and we will be happy to advise.

Installing your chosen fire
As the website operates on a sale only basis, we are unable to fit the fire or fireplace for you. Fortunately you can visit www.gassaferegister.co.uk and find a registered Gas Safe engineer that is local to you. The law requires all gas fitters to be Gas Safe registered and therefore you should only allow a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit your fire or fireplace. Gas fitting is not a DIY job.
Ventilation Requirements
For the majority of fires normal room ventilation is enough but some high input fires and all catalytic flueless fires, additional ventilation is required. See specific fire manufacturers literature. Fires that use open or fan assisted flues must have adequate ventilation as the air they burn is taken from inside the room they are situated in.
